Graphic Art |
| |
All photos and scans must be created or scanned no lower than 300 ppi resolutions. Clip art or logos must have a resolution of 1200, vector art is preferable when dealing with clip art and logos. Any resolution or settings lower will result in poor quality or unprintable art. All color files must be CMYK or PMS spot. Any RGB files sent must be converted to CMYK which will cause a noticeable color shift. Digital Photos must be taken at the camera’s highest resolution setting to be usable.

File Types We Can NOT Accept |
| |
|
| |
• POWERPOINT
We can not print from or use any elements used in a PowerPoint file.
• EXCEL
Any Excel files must be exported as text (txt) file. This will remove all formatting and will require art charges to re-format the information.
• FREEHAND & COREL
We do not support native Freehand or Corel files. Files must be exported as an EPS with all fonts changed to outline, with all clip art/ photos/ logos supplied along with the EPS file.
• PAGEMAKER
PageMaker files (if usable) will incur art charges to convert to InDesign files. All fonts/ clip art/ photos/ logos must be supplied along with PageMaker file. |

|
| • VECTOR BASED ARTWORK |
| |
|
Art created in illustration programs such as: Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, CorelDraw are vector based. These programs are meant for creating artwork, logo design, drawings, illustrations, etc. Artwork createdin these programs can be scaled to any size without loss in quality. Theseprograms are not meant for page layout. Using these programs for page layout creates extremely large, complexfiles that usually do not print properly, if they print at all. These files can also be saved with fonts used in the file intact,or they can be broken into outlines. Files with fonts intact need to have the fonts used included with the file so that theywill print. It is best, and we prefer that the fonts be broken into outlines. This eliminates font problems. Keep in mind thatonce turned into outlines the text cannot be edited for typographical errors, or changes on our end.
|
 |
|
| |
|
| |
|
| • RASTER BASED ARTWORK |
| |
|
Created in programs such as: Adobe PhotoShop, Corel Photo Paint, Microsoft Paint, (different names for raster filesare: TIFF EPS, PSD, and JPG) all create raster based file. These file types should never be used for setting type, or as pagelayout as everything in the file will have soft, fuzzy edges. Text cannot be edited, or changed in the file. Scanned art orart created in these programs MUSThave a minimum of 300 pixels per inch resolution at the size it is to be printed at.These files cannot be enlarged from the size that they are scanned (or created) without a loss in quality. TIFF and EPSfiles are the preferred file formats for scanned images. These file types are the highest quality, uncompressed, supportCMYK file separations, and work with all page layout programs.

| • ABOUT DOTS & PIXELS |
| |
|
The quality of the scanned or supplied images and artwork will have a tremendous impact on theappearance of the final project.
The better the images, the better the document’s appearance.Photos or raster images (tif & jpeg) such as artwork created in Adobe PhotoShop should be scannedor produced at 300 dots per inch (dpi).
Black and white line art, such as logos, etc., should be scanned at 1200 dpi. Grayscale images suchas black and white photos should be scanned at 600 dpi.

“Factoid”
Simply increasing the dpi of a low resolution image
will not improve it’sprintquality. |

| |
|
| • BEWAREOf Web Images |
| |
Gif files are not acceptable for printing purposesbecause they are a compressed file format, theysupport only 256 colors or less, and they aregenerally low resolution (72 pixels per inch). Giffiles are not supported by page layout programsandcannot be separated into 4-color process forprinting. The web and the printing process arevery different technically and what looks goodon the web will NOT when reproduce in theprinting process.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| • UNACCEPTABLE FILE TYPES |
| |
BMP,WMF (Windows Bitmap, Windows Metafile) are not acceptable because they are not supported bypage layout programs, and they are compressed files with limited color palettes.
Jpeg files are NOT ACCEPTABLEfor printing (except for digital cameras – see below) because theyare a compressed file format, they generally are RGB color, and they are generally low resolution (72 pixelsper inch which results in a lack of sharpness and detail in the image). RGB color separations do not representthe full color spectrum that is reproducible with 4-color process, so changes in color will occur.

|
| |
|
| • Smile And Say . . . Mega-Pixel |
| |
Most digital cameras produces images that are saved as Jpeg files. When using a digital camera it isimperative that the pictures be taken at the HIGHEST resolution setting. This setting will limit the amount ofphotos taken but will yeld the highest quality. It is also best not to manipulate the pictures in any picture orphoto software you have on your computer unless you are familiar with and understand resolution issuesand standards. The raw image is the best and safest way to go.
